University of Glasgow Inspiring people to...

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world and ranked in the top 1% in the world. Today, it is a broad-based research intensive institution with a global reach.

The new website needed to reflect the University strategy and promote the recruitment of international students (especially PGR) and promote and demonstrate research excellence. Our brief was to create a world class visual website design, which was clean, considered and flexible.

The idea

In the initial stage of the redesign we discovered the existing information architecture was too convoluted and difficult to navigate around the site. The user journey needed simplfying which meant analysing the current site and creating a structure which worked and was easy to navigate. Once the structure was set we worked on ways of guiding the user through the site, developing a responsive panel menu which clearly indicates where the user is within the site. We also integrated panels which deliver key information and related content to the page.

The delivery

To assist the in-house development team at Glasgow we developed a set of templates which could be easily integrated into the TerminalFour content management system. A responsive framework was developed from the designs so content flowed across any device being used. The semantics of this structure were carefully considered whilst consistency across templates was critical to allow further templates or pages to be developed from these. Once the framework was tested and evaluated we focused on the content that would sit within it. We took a modular approach so individual components could be used throughout the website and arranged in any combination of ways depending on hierarchy of content and key messaging within the university.

The results

Absolute developed not only a digital guidelines, but a condensed PDF version which could easily be distributed throughout departments to ensure that moving forward all Faculties & Schools had the tools to align themselves with the new digital presence.
